This year's Homelessness Marathon will broadcast live from the streets
of Montreal on Tuesday, February 20th, starting at sunset and running
all night long until sunrise on Wednesday, February 21st.
The fifth annual
Homelessness Marathon will once again serve up 14 hours of people-powered
radio, broadcasting this year from outside of the Native Friendship Center.
With the goal of being a consciousness-raising event, the Marathon will
provide an opportunity for homeless people and their supporters to take
to the airwaves, and allow a nationwide discussion on homelessness issues
and possible solutions.
Reaching out to every listener, the audio for the
Homelessness Marathon is available for free to all non-commercial broadcasters
via the Internet. Last year, nearly thirty stations carried the Homelessness
Marathon. The participation of community radio stations from across Canada is
vital for the Marathon to achieve its goals. Thus, we are currently inviting
your station to participate in the upcoming Homelessness Marathon.
We will be
organizing panel discussions for this year's Marathon and we welcome your
suggestions for topics and local contacts who can share views on the issues.
We are also inviting you to create short, pre-produced pieces (5 minutes in length)
focusing on homelessness in your community, which we hope to air as bridges
between each hour (these should be posted on http://www.radio4all.net or sent
to us on CD).
For more information on carrying this year's Marathon or to confirm
you participation again, please contact CKUT's Community News Department. Any
feedback from last year's Marathon is also appreciated. A tentative broadcast
schedule will be available soon.
For more information and to confirm your
station's participation, please contact Gretchen King, Coordinator of Canada's
5th Annual Homelessness Marathon: [email protected] 514.448.4041 x6788.

"Society has a fascination with homeless people, people living on the streets. Almost a perverse fascination. People don't get a chance to see much of that. We thought it would be exciting to get a glimpse of that kind of life. Fights are part of homeless culture. It's a way for them to vent their anger. We're simply there to video it. " ![]() |
